$36 million spend announced for electricity upgrades in South Auckland. What does it mean for your bill?

Electricity infrastructure improvements
Tuesday, March 23, 2021

The Commerce Commission has approved a decision to allow Transpower to invest $36 million to replace ageing infrastructure and cater for increasing electricity demand in South Auckland.

Transpower, which owns and operates the national electricity grid, applied to the commission last year to spend $36 million to invest in its Bombay-Otahuhu regional network by June 2023.

The investment will increase capacity and improve the reliability of the electricity supply in the area, says Commission Deputy Chair Sue Begg.

“Consistent with our draft decision, we remain of the view that this investment is needed to increase the capacity of the network and improve the reliability of electricity supply to the Bombay–Otahuhu region.”

Will electricity consumers have to pay for the upgrade?

The decision allows Transpower to recover the cost from consumers of purchasing and commissioning two new transformers at the Bombay grid exit point, as well as undertaking preparatory work to replace conductors on the Otahuhu to Wiri line.

The project’s goals to provide a more reliable service and meet increasing demand are good news for South Auckland residents. However, it does mean that consumers could see their power bills increase in the future to cover the cost of the upgrade.
