6 Ways to Lower your Electricity Bill in Spring

The temperatures are slowly, oh so slowly, beginning to warm up. However, you may still be using your heater in the mornings and evenings, and turning the lights on as soon as you get home from work. If you are struggling with your electricity bill, there are some things you can do to lower it, such as reducing the amount of energy you use as a household. Just a few simple steps can help make a difference to your monthly power bill, so you can make savings, and put your money towards more exciting things. 

 

1. Check Doors and Windows

You will want to preserve the heat in the evenings, while it’s still chilly. Draw curtains before sunset to preserve the heat generated during the day, and open them in the morning to try to absorb warmth from the sun. Stop drafts from getting in by making sure that doors and windows seal properly. Place a draft stopper by doors. 

 

2. Heat Wisely

Only use your heater or heat pump when you need it, such as in the evenings. Make sure the thermostat is between 18-20 degrees and close doors to make sure the heater can efficiently warm your room. Make sure to turn the heater off during the day, when you are at school or work. Add a rug to hardwood floors to help trap any heat generated. If you use the oven, leave the door open after cooking to release the heat into your home. 

 

3. Energy Efficient Appliances

Choose household appliances that are energy efficient. Old appliances, such as old fridges, chest freezers, heaters, or washing machines, can consume a lot of energy. If you have the means, consider investing in new appliances with a high energy star rating. This means that they will use less energy to do their jobs, and help reduce the amount of energy you consume. 

 

4. Reduce Hot Water Use

Hot water requires electricity to heat. Using less hot water can save you a lot of money on your power bill. Minimise the length of your showers, and pause the shower while using soap or shampoo. Switch to cold water washes for your laundry. Your laundry detergent can do just as good a job at cleaning your clothes, and you don’t need to always run a hot water wash. Run cold water washes weekly, and save the occasional hot water wash for your bed sheets after you have had a cold or sickness. 

 

5. Turn Off Appliances

When you are not using your appliances and devices, they fall into standby mode, or vampire power, which can end up costing you more than $100 per year. Turn off your TV, monitors, your espresso machine and phone chargers when you are not using them. 

 

6. LED Lights

LED light bulbs use a lot less power than traditional light bulbs. Consider switching out any traditional bulbs around your house for LED light bulbs so you can keep shining, for significantly less.
