10 Budge-friendly Ways to Keep the House Warm with Power Compare
Thursday, April 4, 2024

It’s April and you’re already feeling the bite of autumn at home. You want to reach for your heater remote but you know that it can hike your electricity bill if it’s running all the time.

As prices continue to increase around us, it has never been more important to keep our bills chilled and our homes warm. We have put together a list of our top 10 tips to help you keep the house warm as temperatures drop.

1. Invest in Energy Efficient Heaters

If you are in the market for a new heater, be sure to invest in one that has a high energy efficient rating. Energy efficiency simply means that an appliance is using the least amount of energy to perform its task. So for heaters, energy efficient ones will still warm your home on cold nights without using heaps of energy. This means you can stay warm without receiving a jumpscare of a power bill!

Why is Energy Efficiency Important?

2. Move your Furniture

Make sure your couches or beds are not blocking heating units. You don’t want the air flow to be impacted and find your bedroom is chilly when it’s time to hit the hay!

3. Set a Heater Timer

Most modern heater units will come with a thermostat timer. You can set a timer for when your home or room is at the right temperature so that the heater can take a break from working.

4. Hold the Heat with Good Insulation

If you own your home, check that the insulation in the structure of the home is adequate. Rentals also have a requirement to meet Health Home standards. So, you can enquire with your landlord to have the insulation in the room and walls updated. You can also consider adding other DIY forms of insulation around the home. Window films can act as a double-glazing insulator to help retain heat. If you have wooden or tiled flooring, add a fluffy rug.

5. Install Snug-fitting Curtains

Curtains another great way to retain heat. Floor length curtains will work best for holding in warmth. Be sure to open the curtains in the morning to allow the sun’s warmth in, and close them just before sunset to hold in the heat.

6. Keep your House Dry

A dry house is a key element in keeping mould at bay and retaining heat. When you shower, turn on the extraction fan and leave it on for 30 minutes after your shower. Hang laundry outside when the sun is out. If you need to hang-dry clothes inside, consider investing in a dehumidifier to help reduce moisture in the home.

7. Leave the Oven Door Open when you Finish

If you use the oven to cook your staple winter mac and cheese, leave the oven door open after you have pulled your dish out and turned the appliance off. The heat from the oven will disperse into the room and help keep you warm. It’s a great way to use the oven for two jobs!

8. Clean the Filters in your Heater

It is important to make sure your heater can work optimally. Check the air filters in your heater and give them a clean. You’ll be surprised how much dust build-up there is! Regularly cleaning your heater filters will ensure they heat up your room like they are meant to, without overworking and costing you more on your power bill!

9. Check your Windows and Doors Seal

When you close up for the night, you want your home to be closed and sealed! This is how you will retain the warmth your heater expelled during the evening so you don’t wake up shivering in the middle of the night. Check that all your doors and windows seal properly!
